Twitter comes of age but still has room to grow

Twitter comes of age but still has room to grow

By Gadjo Sevilla

The ITBusiness.ca staff has written a great  piece on   as well as produced a neat  to celebrate Twitter’s 5th  birthday.

Gadjo Sevilla

It is hard to believe that a nerdy social media service that forced people to think in “140 characters or less,” has outlived a lot of its contemporaries like Google Buzz, Jaiku, Plurk and Pownce and created such a vibrant, speedy and robust micro-blogging ecosystem complete with link shortening services and photo and video workarounds.

What started out as a rather mundane way for people to share what sandwich they were having for lunch has, for the most part, evolved into the world’s best leveler and given hundreds of millions of users a voice. The culture of celebrity has  taken over Twitter as the best way for personalities to stay in touch with their public and for their public to communicate back.

Twitter has also made it possible for consumers to whine about poor customer service or unfair business practices and get a quick and public response from companies. Small and large businesses have responded in part by hiring staff to man their Twitter feeds and provide customer service via Twitter.

Twitter has  also been the best service for taking an “opinion pulse” or crowd source certain topics and ideas. It is also the fastest way to get news. By the time you’ve turned on your TV and fumbled your way to CNN, you could have all the news headlines on display on your Twitter client.

The instantaneous nature and hyper-fast speed of disseminating information has been Twitter’s greatest strength. It has also proven to be an indispensable tool for social change helping people organize and keep in touch during the recent calamities in Japan and New Zealand as well as mobilize during the political unrest in Egypt and Libya.

On the flip-side, Twitter has also been ground zero for the propagation of hoaxes, spam, morbid death rumours and wholesale trolling and hate messages as well as fake accounts. Then there’s the inevitable outages and “Fail Whales” that let users know the service is overloaded and inaccessible.

Twitter has been improving but we feel it is still the Wild West out there with a lot of room for improvement.

What are your thoughts about Twitter? Has it been a useful tool or a time waster? We would love to know, in 140 characters, or less.

Bookmark php Why my pony tail ain’t my brand

By Francis Moran

One day last week, I tweeted the message you see to the right because I was tickled by bookmark php the email that came in. In my haste, however, I added a snappy hashtag and thereby made the same common mistake I often accuse marketers — even branding experts — of making.

The prospect who sent me that email remembered how I look. I will be the first to admit that a red — okay, rapidly greying — pony tail, full-but-tidy beard and what used to be a curly moustache do tend to set me apart from the average corporate consultant, even in the less-buttoned-down realm of marketing. Based on how I look, he was able to easily remember who I am.

He wasn’t, however, looking for a pony-tailed, bearded guy; he was, in fact, looking for a PR firm. And, because of whatever impression about my abilities as a PR guy that I had left with him during a past engagement, he immediately thought of me.

In that nutshell, then, you have the difference between branding and visual identity, something that, as I said at the opening, many marketers and not a few so-called branding experts often confuse.

The best explanation of branding I have ever heard came from , an early investor in Google whose pithy and dead-on definition I will never forget. “Branding,” he said, “Is what people bookmark php think about you when you’re not there.” That’s exactly what happened with that prospect last week. In my absence, this chap thinks of me as a good person to turn to for their new PR requirements. That’s my brand to him and, thankfully, it’s both clearly memorable and what I would want it to be in this instance.

How I look, arguably also memorable, is my visual identity. And, while it might contribute to my brand — successfully, if it suggests I’m not a conventional thinker — it ain’t my brand.

Far too often, in my experience, marketers confuse one with the other, with the result that the so-called branding strategies they develop for their clients are actually little more than graphic standards manuals that explain why the various elements bookmark php of the company’s visual identity exist and how they’re going to be governed.

Many of these manuals further torque the error by seeking to define the company’s brand, and this is where the exercise becomes even more misguided. Companies don’t define their brand; the marketplace does that for them. The most any company can do is define a set of brand attributes by which it would like to be known and then do its very best to live up to those attributes, something I call the company’s “brand promise.” The degree to which the company lives up to its brand promise in every single thing it does is exactly the degree to which it will be branded by the marketplace as it would want to be.

Blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate Incubation: Whose job is it, anyway?

Incubation: Whose job is it, anyway?

By Francis Moran and Leo Valiquette

“Government doesn’t start companies,” , CEO blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate of , told us a little while back. “Individuals do.”

Nonetheless, government does have an important role to play in the value chain of bringing technology to market. This is particularly true at the regional and municipal level, where local economic development agencies attempt to attract anchor employers and/or support the growth of home-grown technology ventures with programs and incentives funded by the local tax base and higher levels of government. (We will explore the broader role of government in a future post.)

These efforts, however, raise a few fundamental questions:

  • What has proven to be the most effective way for an economic development agency to support a strong and sustainable technology sector in its region?
  • Is it possible for an organization funded by the public purse and influenced by the bureaucratic culture of government to keep its finger blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate on the pulse of a dynamic, even volatile, technology market?
  • How does a startup ensure a local economic development agency is capable of providing the timely and relevant support it needs to validate its market opportunity, secure sources of funding and achieve market penetration?

(Please share blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate your thoughts on any of these points. This is a subject area far larger than the confines of this modest post.)

Import vs. domestic

As  explores in his book, Making Technology Happen, there are two general approaches to building a local technology hub:

  • A grow-your-own strategy, in which the emphasis is on creating and growing local companies; and
  • An importation strategy, in which the emphasis is on attracting branch plants and branch offices of existing companies that are headquartered elsewhere.

Doyle argues that the importation approach seldom works. The people who make the decision to locate a facility in a specific municipality make these decisions based on factors that cannot be influenced by the kind blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate of salesmanship practiced by most economic development agencies. He cites several examples in the U.S. where large technology companies made their location decisions based on the level of entrepreneurial activity and supporting infrastructure available in the winning community, rather than the efforts of economic development officers to woo them.

In other words, it was communities with the entrepreneurial savvy and robust ecosystem to support a grow-your-own strategy that attracted the most interest.

However, moving ahead with either, or a combination of both, of these strategies, is not the end of the discussion. Far from it. As we explored in the previous post, Silicon Valley is arguably the hotbed of innovation that startups must tap into in today’s recession weary global economy to obtain what they need to bring technology to market.

Too much bread, too little peanut butter?

It is hardly practical, or desirable, for most startups to pull up stakes and relocate to California, despite the preference among many Valley VCs that their portfolio companies do so. What these startups require is help finding the resources crucial to their success that lie beyond their own backyard. But many organizations involved in startup incubation at the local level are not in a position to provide this.

“Often, the peanut butter gets spread too thin,” said , managing partner of  and co-founder of the . “Too many smaller organizations don’t have truly world-class people running the show who understand what it is to be competitive on a global stage. If an incubator is 18 months behind what is going on in Silicon Valley, its companies are not going to succeed. It’s just spinning its wheels.”

Instead, he applauds the best-of-breed models that have emerged in Canada, such as  in Toronto and  in Vancouver. [Update: Bootup Labs closed its accelerator fund late last year, a few months after our interview with Albinson.] Both organizations are staffed by strategic advisors, drawn from the business and investment communities, who can provide startups with the hands on mentorship that will help them get ahead.

“These guys are plugged in, aggressive and credible,” Albinson said. “They really add value to the companies they work with.”

believes that government, no matter how good its intentions, should remain on the sidelines and focus instead on providing a supportive framework. At the regional level, two key ways to help is through tax breaks and by providing real estate at a low cost.

Glaros is a general manager for , a mentorship-driven seed stage investment organization that runs programs in Boston, Boulder, New York City and Seattle.

“The good thing about the entrepreneur community is that it is quick and nimble and can make things happen,” Glaros told us in an interview last year. But when government takes too direct a hand, the bureaucratic and administrative burden that invariably builds can end up more of a hindrance than a help.

Pointers from Pittsburgh

But that is not to say that a government-funded effort is doomed as a matter of course. One example of government policy at work that helps savvy entrepreneurs do what they do best without getting in the way is  and its seed acceleration program, .

Innovation Works deems itself the Pittsburgh region’s largest and most active seed-stage investor. Since 1999, it has invested more than $50 million in more than 150 companies.

IW is a private non-profit corporation, which is largely funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority. Its AlphaLab is described as “a catalyst for launching and accelerating the growth of the next generation of software, web, mobile, entertainment technology, and hardware companies.” IW receives five per cent common stock in an AlphaLab company in return for a $25,000 investment, plus workspace and services. As a non-profit, any financial returns IW is re-deployed into the community.

Despite IW’s status as a non-profit and its support by a state agency, it is anything but bureaucratic.

“While our funding comes from the state, we’re not part of the state government,” said AlphaLab director . “All of the employees at IW come from the private sector and investment management, with experience in running companies or launching software businesses.”

So what does all this mean?

Government can play a vital role in supporting a robust and vibrant startup environment at the local level, provided it takes its lead from the business leaders who live on the cutting edge of the technology market.

The challenge for entrepreneurs is to be careful about coupling all of their cars to the wrong train, or even one train. Does the team at your local incubator or economic development agency possess the entrepreneurial expertise and insight that can only come from having “been there and done that?” Is it capable of making the linkages you need in a particular overseas market, or in Boston, or in Silicon Valley? Find out by talking to people from those places. Get connected to them through grass roots organizations such as the C100.

We have said many times (and will likely do so many times again) that a startup must connect with as many people as possible to find the right resources it needs to succeed. The key thing is to not be daunted by how far afield that search may take you. In our next installment, we will talk more about the entrepreneurial right stuff that it takes to succeed.

This is the sixth article in a continuing series that examines the state of the ecosystem necessary to successfully bring technology to market. Based on dozens of interviews with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors, business leaders, academics, tech-transfer experts and policy makers, this series looks at what is working and what can be improved in the go-to-market ecosystem in the United States, Canada and Britain. We invite your feedback.

Taking privacy mobile: Embedding the principles of Privacy by Design

Mobile technologies are increasingly ubiquitous, and provide us with growing opportunities to stay connected and informed bookmark php from anywhere, at any time.

But these same technologies can raise significant privacy concerns. Some concerns arise from the general means of engagement with mobile phones – such as users’ propensity to always leave them on. Of course, this enables incoming phone calls and text messages to be received, and many other applications that are central to the functionality of mobile devices. But it may also enable activities such

Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario

as location tracking, which can provide very accurate information about where the device’s owner goes over the course of the bookmark php day, and when.

Happily, privacy need not be a casualty of our desire to stay connected wherever we may roam. By applying the principles of – which takes a proactive, preventative approach to embedding privacy into the architecture of systems and technologies – we can achieve a positive-sum, win-win outcome, and enjoy both privacy and mobile connectivity.

Recently, my office and teamed up on a that addresses precisely this issue, mapping the way forward for meaningful privacy protection in the mobile space by providing practical advice for embedding the principles of Privacy by Design (PbD) into mobile technologies and applications.

Our report builds on bookmark php the findings of original research conducted by ASU’s new PbD Research Lab.  Researchers convened an expert panel of top executives from leading mobile organizations to identify and rate privacy and security challenges in their rapidly-expanding field, and propose potential solutions grounded in real-world experiences.

Using the solutions identified by this expert panel, our outlines key privacy responsibilities for each major stakeholder group in the industry – while noting that parties will have to collaborate to develop the most effective solutions.  For example, device manufacturers must ensure that the requisite privacy tools are built-in, using potential solutions such as automatic, seamless encryption of device data, the development of privacy wizards, and safe disposal and secure destruction mechanisms. Similarly, OS and platform developers must work on possible approaches such as the integration of fine-grained, cross-application privacy controls, reporting mechanisms and regulating the access that applications have to device data.  However, neither can fully implement these protections without the other party.

The responsibilities of network providers, application developers/data processors, and users are also addressed, as are areas in which full-sector collaboration is required in order to, for example, develop privacy standards, develop and deploy consumer-facing privacy icons, and build user awareness of potential privacy issues through education bookmark php efforts.

In addition to tracing the way forward for privacy in the mobile sector, the Roadmap also demonstrates the extent to which “Privacy by Design is a team sport.”  All parties have a role to play, both on their own and in partnership with others.

In the context of mobile communications, if device hardware does not allow for the implementation of a given privacy measure, the OS or platform does not support it, or the user does not know about it, then that protection cannot be effective.  This message will hold true for every implementation of Privacy by Design, regardless of industry sector – collaboration is essential, and will benefit all involved.

Next stop for tech ubiquity – your car

I was born in the last generation that at t unlock code by imei will ever remember living in a world where computing was not ubiquitous.

A computer didn’t enter my household until I was 11 years old, and we located it on the desk in the corner of our basement. For many years, that’s where my computing experience was contained – if I wanted to do word processing or access the Internet to do research (OK, most of the time I was playing Quake), I had to sit at the desk in the basement. Now that limited access to computing seems

Brian Jackson

quaint.

I currently have three PCs in my apartment that serve different purposes, a laptop that I mostly keep at the office, and several other mobile devices. Now computing and the Internet is within arm’s length, at t unlock code by imei if not on my person, nearly all the time. There is only one place that IT hasn’t yet become readily accessible in my life – in my ride. But with auto makers integrating more tech features into their new car models every year, that is about to change.

Related Feature:

From Ford’s MyTouch powered by Microsoft Sync, to Kia’s Uvo voice-activated system, to Mercedes’ SplitView screen that offers different views to both the driver and the passenger one a single screen, there’s a lot of tech wooing drivers attention. Made to comply with hands-free driving legislation in place across many provinces and states, auto makers have created innovative user interfaces and drivers are getting used to the idea of having them in their cars.

ITBusiness.ca worked with Delvinia Interactive and its AskingCanadians panel to ask Canadians what tech they are currently using in their cars and what they they might use in the future. While most (62.4 per cent) still are like me, and drive tech-free rides, many are using IT products behind the wheel.

The most popular tech being used was GPS navigation (16.2 per cent) and Bluetooth connectivity (15.8 per cent). That makes sense, since drivers often have a need to know where they are going and to talk on the phone while staying safe and avoiding getting ticketed by police. Another nine per cent of Canadians have voice-activated features in their cars and six per cent have touch screen consoles.

Many more Canadians may soon have some more of these features in their cars. More than one-third say they would consider GPS navigation the most important technology to have in a car, while 17.5 per cent chose Bluetooth, and at t unlock code by imei 11.2 per cent selected voice-activated features.

One out of five Canadians said that a vehicle’s technology features would be “a very important aspect of my decision” for the next vehicle they buy. Only one in 10 Canadians said technology would be “not at all important in my decision.”

This poll of 1058 respondents was conducted for ITBusiness.ca.  The data was collected from March 10th to March 13th. at t unlock code by imei

The poll indicates Canadians are warming up to the notion of using tech while we drive. Especially as auto makers make it more safe and more convenient to stay productive while we drive, it becomes an appealing feature for those who commute to work. The reality of many urban workers today is a lot of time sitting in traffic at snail’s pace – why not try to make the best use of that time?

Innovative technology features also show auto makers could continue to be on the when it comes to debuting new technology interfaces to the public. Imagine how useful a GPS system would be if it took an augmented reality approach – overlaying directions and informational icons directly onto your windshield as you drove.

Such use of technology might seem futuristic now. But we’ve already come a long way from using that computer tucked away in a basement corner.

Power support premium leather sleeve ipad ivory ITBusiness.ca readers demand Flash on iPad 2

ITBusiness.ca readers demand Flash on iPad 2

By Gadjo Sevilla

Hi, my name is Gadjo Sevilla and I am the community manager for discussions here at ITBusiness.ca. We hope to be able to guide and enhance power support premium leather sleeve ipad ivory discussions, share ideas and reactions to the top stories, key topics and burning issues covered across these pages.

Gadjo Sevilla

One of the big stories last week was the launch of Apple’s iPad 2. A survey by ITBusiness.ca showed that a majority of our readers would like to see Flash capabaility on Apple’s new tablet device.

Introduced by Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, who is currently on medical leave, the redesigned iPad is 33 per cent thinner than the current model yet sports a new dual core Apple A5 1GHz processor, 9 times the graphics processing capacity as well as a new gyroscope and rear plus front facing video cameras for FaceTime video calling.

The biggest news, however, was the iPad 2′s pricing and availability. Costing the same as the current iPad, the new version hits U.S.  Apple retail stores and mobile carriers this Friday March 11 and will be available in Canada on power support premium leather sleeve ipad ivory March 25th.

This means that come April, iPad 2 will be widely distributed just as some of its competitors are readied for launch. Not only does the iPad 2 seem to cover all the specification advantages of its Android-powered competitors (dual-core processors, HDMI video out, better graphics for gaming), it is the thinnest and lightest of the bunch and some would argue that it is  currently the cheapest and the most widely available 10-inch tablet.

In another bit of news, the original iPad is now heavily discounted until supplies run out ($419 for a new 16GB Wi-Fi only model, $369 if refurbished). Which makes owning a first generation iPad slightly more compelling for those who don’t need all the bells and whistles of iPad 2.

That’s what you said

Reader interest here on the iPad 2 has been quite steady.

We ran a poll on “the most wished for iPad 2 power support premium leather sleeve ipad ivory features” before the announcement and 63.5 per cent of the respondents picked Adobe Flash as the most desired feature for the iPad 2 while a higher resolution screen (12.5 per cent), dual-cameras (12.5 per cent) and a faster processor (12.5 per cent) were the next most wanted features.

I can tell you that Adobe Flash isn’t coming to the iPad anytime soon. It doesn’t even ship loaded on new MacBook Airs because Apple thinks that Flash hogs background system resources and would slow down the iPad’s performance considerably if used. We did get dual-cameras and a faster processor but a higher resolution screen brings a number of foreseeable problems. The first is price, because a higher resolution display would add cost and the second is that the 65,000 existing iPad apps would need to be rewritten and updated to support another resolution.

In reaction to our story and MacWorld Editor Jason Snell’s quick video, reader Jverboon commented:

“Still nothing is said about printing with it!!! I have the iPad 1 and the recommended printer by power support premium leather sleeve ipad ivory Apple but it does only print photos and not text.” Which is a valid observation.

Apple offers printing on the iPad but only if you use selected printers. We managed to print photos  and webpages on HP and Lexmark printers but like Jverboon, haven’t been successful at printing text documents.

Feedback from our from reader Gisabon stated “guess all the wishes will eventually show up in the iPad 3 or 4 or 5 or …. Apple already crammed some new features in this model. If they put any more, nobody would bother with future models.” Which is in line with what many analysts believe, that Apple boosted the feature set of the iPad 2 “just enough” for it to make its product more desirable than competing tablets which while announced, aren’t even shipping in bulk yet.

Any more thoughts about iPad 2? Is the updated feature set enough to entice new users or are people likely to wait out this version for the next one?

Htc silicone skin black for magic iPad 2: Will the ‘magic’ live on?

iPad 2: Will the ‘magic’ live on?

By Krista Napier

On March 2nd, Steve Jobs announced Apple’s htc silicone skin black for magic latest gadget, .  The street date for Canada is March 25.

Krista Napier

When the first iPad launched last year, Jobs described it as “magical”. So does that label apply to the iPad 2? It’s always a tough act to follow the wonderment of the first born child. In this case, iPad 2 has some incremental features and functionality that set it apart from the first version, including:

  • Rear facing HD camera, and front facing VGA camera
  • 33 per cent thinner 8.8mm (13.4mm)
  • 15 per cent lighter: 1.3 pounds (vs. 1.5 pounds)
  • Two colours – black and white
  • Up to 2x faster CPU and up to 9x faster graphics
  • Dual core processors
  • 3-axis gyroscopes (aids in gesture-based actions, navigation and gaming)
  • Running iOS 4.3

These features will also help the iPad 2 remain competitive with the competition that will be in the market in 2011, and will have many features and functions that were missing in the first iPad. Samsung, Motorola, RIM, and others  are not in the market yet, but have been announced and expected to launch in 2011.

Related stories

Although bleeding edge adopters bought their iPad’s not even 1 year ago (iPad was first available in Canada end of May, 2010) some may still pass on their existing ‘old’ technology to kids – parents or friends and opt for the latest and greatest.  Other early adopters may put off purchasing a new iPad so soon, htc silicone skin black for magic and wait for the iPad 3, for which rumors have already begun. Why? iPad 2 may not have enough of the “magic” for some existing iPad owners to upgrade just yet. The iOS upgrade that was made available recently could provide enough added functionality such as multitasking to hold off until the 3rd version of iPad. And while the devices are affordable at a starting price of CAN$549, they still put a dent in the wallet.

So how will Apple succeed with iPad 2? By continuing to build on its economies of scale that it holds over other vendors in the market.  Apple’s brand and loyal following of customers will also help drive sales, but arguably the most important factor longer term will be its ecosystem – the community of developers and hence, the 350,000 plus apps it has available to run on its mobile devices and over 65,000 native apps for iPad, increasing its value to the end user.

Tablet Review:

There is room for competition for those vendors focused on niche markets. RIM is well positioned to win the hearts of business users in Canada who are already invested in BlackBerry devices, and trust the security inherent in RIM’s devices and brand name. Apple’s iPad2 does not support flash either, impacting the user experience while Web browsing, and opening the door for competitors. There were also some issues with iPads being returned recently due to the touch screens acting up. Customers may dismiss that as part of the bleeding edge experience and working out the bugs, or it could impact their next media tablet selection. As for the old inventory, it’s expected to come down in price to help clear shelves, while the new devices will maintain the same price structure as before.

iPad 2′s incremental features will help keep the momentum going and drive continued adoption and mindshare among early adopters and the mainstream alike… at least until Apple comes htc silicone skin black for magic out with another magical surprise. Abracadabra!

Lg mobile gt540 Immigrants behind Silicon Valley’s tech supremacy

By Francis Moran and Leo Valiquette

In his book, The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challenge, , RBC professor for the commercialization of innovation at the University of Ottawa’s , talks about the “social contract between science and society lg mobile gt540 in the U.S.” that arose in the late 1940s and gave rise to that unique ecosystem we know today as Silicon Valley.

The basis of this contract is found in , a 1945 report to U.S. President Harry Truman by visionary Vannevar Bush that outlined a U.S. post-war science and technology policy that would ultimately result in the creation of the National Science Foundation. In the years that followed, military-funded unclassified R&D in the private sector, driven by the pressures of the Cold War and the space race, laid the foundation for Silicon Valley and made Bush’s vision a reality.

The story of Silicon Valley’s evolution, which is obviously far beyond the confines of this series, continues to support the misconception that the U.S. is somehow better at producing successful entrepreneurs and multinational technology enterprises than other countries. As if the “right stuff” is somehow genetically encoded as result of being born on American soil.

But as Duke University adjunct professor  observed in  in the March 2009 issue of BusinessWeek, the success of Silicon Valley in fact refutes this stereotype.

“Despite the fact that they constitute only 12 per cent of the American population, immigrants have started 52 per cent of Silicon Valley’s technology companies and contributed to more than 25 per cent of our global patents. They make up 24 per cent of the American science lg mobile gt540 and engineering workforce holding bachelor’s degrees and 47 per cent of science and engineering workers who have PhDs,” Wadhwa wrote.

A multinational ecosystem that is bigger than any one country

What has been created in Silicon Valley is an ecosystem with the critical mass to attract the top people from around the world and provide them with the varied resources they need to build success. There are also cultural elements here that bear noting; namely, an appetite for risk and an acceptance that failure is a fundamental building block of business success. But again, one can argue these characteristics define the multinational culture of Silicon Valley itself, as opposed to the U.S. in general.

“What Silicon Valley has done is create an ecosystem and a brand, a model, that allows anyone from anywhere in the world to come and execute.”

Simply put, for startup entrepreneurs of whatever origin, Silicon Valley is lg mobile gt540 where it’s at.

, managing partner of  and co-founder of the C100, is another ex-pat Canadian immersed in the U.S. VC and startup scene. From his view, Silicon Valley offers the broad cluster innovation, professional services and veteran expertise needed to support risk-taking, along with “a level of global customer intimacy that one just doesn’t see anywhere else on the planet.”

The tens of thousands of talented individuals who have been drawn to Silicon Valley represent a rich resource for startups from almost any country in search of the counsel, capital and resources they need to bring technology to market. India and Israel are two outstanding examples of countries that have leveraged the large ex-pat communities they have in the Valley.

In Canada’s case, there are 300,000 ex-pats living in the orbit of California’s technology sector.

“We must find out how to tap into all these Canadians and ask their help,” said , president and CEO of Waterloo’s .

Incubation from the grass roots: The C100

In March 2010, a number of Canadian ex-pats decided to make that task easier. They pooled their resources to create the C100.

C100 is a non-profit, member-driven organization dedicated to supporting Canadian technology entrepreneurship and investment, comprised of a select group of Canadians based primarily in the Valley, including executives of leading technology companies, experienced startup entrepreneurs and venture capital investors.

“We’re trying to give Canadians as much of an unfair advantage as we can,” said Lee. “We are trying to leverage the talent pool down here to provide that success path, to provide mentors, connections and access to funding.”

Within its first five months, the C100 earned the support and sponsorship of government, economic development agencies and technology incubators across Canada, from  and , to ,  and Communitech. Seventy Canadian companies were introduced in the Valley and five secured VC investment — a total of US$45 million. And that was just the start.

“We’re still small and still growing,” said Lee.

And this is important to a new or growing tech venture because…

is CEO of , a Waterloo startup that is among the scores of companies to date that have been introduced in the Valley by the C100. To him, the C100 is a “business mentoring program on steroids” that can help a startup “go beyond becoming a company to becoming a globally competitive company that can scale.”

Achieving this global perspective it critical in two ways.

First, to bring technology to market, startup entrepreneurs must think globally in terms of which markets they should target. Second, they must also think globally in terms of how far afield they should look for the help and resources they need to reach those markets.

As the C100 demonstrates, there is an overwhelming array of resources out there for company incubation and growth. The only way for a startup to tap into this is to realize that the value chain for bringing technology to market transcends borders. Entrepreneurs must look beyond their own backyards and connect with as many people as possible.

What is your view on the value of “plugging into the Valley?” What do you consider to be the essential ingredients for, as Campbell put it, going “beyond becoming a company to becoming a globally competitive company that can scale?” Please share your thoughts through the comment section below.

In our next instalment, we will discuss startup incubation from the perspective of how economic development is best handled at the community and regional level.

How to avoid falling prey to Libya 419 scams

 By Nick Johnston

As seen in the past, (who typically promise large amounts of money, but demand upfront fees or payments first) are quick to react to bookmark php current events. For example, in the aftermath of Haiti’s devastating earthquake in January 2010, .

Last month, MessageLabs Intelligence saw a number of different 419 scams, including ones that capitalize on the current political turmoil in the Middle East; another on an event in the very distant future; and lastly, one written in an uncommon language.

Libya scam

MessageLabs Intelligence identified a scam message trying to take advantage of the unrest in Libya. It seems that as countries around the world scramble to evacuate their citizens from the deteriorating situation in the country, 419 scammers are also rushing to send out messages.

The scam message claims to be written by someone connected to Libya’s Senussi crown (overthrown by Muammar al-Gaddafi in his 1969 coup d’état). The scam follows a fairly normal form: the scammer claims to want assistance in transferring his money out of the country, and is prepared to pay for help. The scammer alludes to his involvement in the oil business, possibly thinking that this will entice people to reply to get a share of the wealth. Of course, the scammer will demand ever-inventive upfront fees and charges, and never send any money.

Example of 419 seeking to exploit Libyan unrest

Egypt’s former President, Hosni Murabak scam

Only a few days after the resignation of , MessageLabs Intelligence saw a German language 419 scam claiming to be from bookmark php his lawyer.

The scammer claimed that he needed the recipient’s help to retrieve $2.5 million of the president’s funds, frozen in a Belgian bank account. The scammer further claimed that he’ll pay for assistance.

The recent uncertainty about Mubarak’s whereabouts and health, as well as reports that many jurisdictions are considering seizing his assets, could perhaps bookmark php lend credibility to this particular 419 scam.

As usual for many 419 scams, the message is poorly constructed and has probably been automatically translated into German. Our advanced monitoring systems alerted us to this scam. Although this type of mail is generally low volume, it can still be a significant nuisance.

2022 World Cup scam

The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was used by both 419/advance fee fraud scammers and malware authors to lure unsuspecting victims into handing over money or installing malware.

Related story -

Last December, MessageLabs Intelligence saw two scams which claimed the recipient bookmark php had won a lottery supposedly connected with the 2014 World Cup. We were surprised to see scams promoting an event so far in the future, so we were especially surprised to recently see a scam promoting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Evidently scammers are not concerned by the fact that the tournament is more than 10 years away.

The scam itself is fairly normal. The mail contains very little content in the body; it simply encourages recipients to open the attached PDF document. The attachment was created with a popular open source office suite and claims that the recipient has won £1.5 million (roughly $2.41 million). The document contains a logo for the tournament as a watermark, and also contains a picture of FIFA president Sepp Blatter with Qatar Football Association president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani.

419 Scam: PDF Attachment relating to Qatar World Cup 2022

The message encourages recipients to email the scammer to claim the money, or to phone a forwarding number, which often routes the call to the scammer abroad.

Welsh language scam

While we have seen 419 scam mails constructed in many different languages such as German and French, in February, for the first time, we came across one written in Welsh.

The content of the mail was typical of a 419 scam mail. The scammer poses as a widow of a Kuwaiti ambassador to the Ivory Coast with $2.5 million in a trust fund. The potential victim has to distribute some of the money to orphanages and the less privileged and in return, the scammer promises to make the victim a beneficiary of the fund.

It’s unlikely that the 419 scammer can read and write Welsh so it’s probable the mail was written in English and then translated into Welsh using an automated language translation website.  It’s unknown why the scammer would have chosen Welsh when this language is read by a relatively small number of people, but further analysis revealed that the recipient in this case was actually based in Wales.

Moreover, the names of the individuals mentioned in the email have also been tailored to match the name of the recipient, which may be used to catch the recipient off-guard. Even though this email was targeting one of our Welsh-based clients, our advanced monitoring systems were able to identify this scam.

419 scams continue to grow in popularity as ways for cybercriminals to make quick money. Luckily, our advanced monitoring systems were able to detect and identify all four of these scams before the recipients became victims.

Griffin gb01737 outfit ice red for iphone 4 Will flow-through shares program help finance tech firms?

By Denzil Doyle

During the past three or four decades, Canadian policy makers at both the federal and provincial levels have tried just about every trick in the book to finance technology companies, particularly those that griffin gb01737 outfit ice red for iphone 4 are at an early stage in their development.

In the early 1980s, we had the Scientific Research Tax Credits (SRTCs) that allowed technology companies that were not yet profitable to predict in advance what their R&D expenditures were going to be during a certain year and then effectively sell those expenditures to taxable corporations and individuals for use as tax write-offs. The troubles came about when the companies were asked to verify their expenditure to the tax authorities. Many CEOs and CFOs ended up in jail or spent years dealing with aggressive tax auditors.

The SRTC program was eventually replaced by the current Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program, in which the R&D must be done in advance and the tax credit comes directly from the government to the company. In the case of a company that is not profitable, the credit takes the form of a cash payment that is a percentage of the R&D expenditures – typically about 40 per cent in provinces where the provinces top up the federal payments.

If there is a deficiency in the SR&ED program, it is that it only applies to R&D and not to other vital activities such as marketing and selling. In the early 90s, both the federal and the provincial governments got into the business of subsidizing the venture capital industry in order to address this deficiency. They left the SR&ED program pretty much the same, but they encouraged the formation of a new breed of venture capital companies known as Labour Sponsored Venture Capital (LSVC) companies. Explaining the role of labour in the LSVCs is beyond the scope of this article (in fact it is beyond the scope of most articles on the subject), but they did offer tax credits of up to 35 per cent to any individual who wished to buy shares in them.

To say that the LSVC program was a success would be stretching the truth. It was poorly designed in the first place and the two levels of government have been redesigning it ever since. For example, the managers of one of the very first LSVCs in Ontario decided they could make more money for their shareholders by investing in T-bills and it was virtually impossible to drag any money out of them for risky ventures like software start-ups. The government addressed that problem by introducing very stringent pacing rules that prevented an LSVC from sitting griffin gb01737 outfit ice red for iphone 4 on its money. However, this was during the period when the so-called “dot-com bubble” was forming and the industry was awash in flaky companies and even flakier managers.

However, faced with the prospect of losing their license to raise more money, the LSVCs invested in many of these flaky situations and when they began to blow up in their faces, the traditional VC companies were quick to tell the governments “I told you so” because they were never exactly cheerleaders of the program from day zero.

As the rules became more complex and more plentiful, the cost of running a LSVC escalated. Scarcely a week went by without some policy or analysis group in one of the two levels of government coming to the industry with a request for information on anything from job creation to the hiring policies of the investee companies. The brokers who sold the investment units insisted upon something they called trailer fees even though they barely understood the product and were unable to provide much post-sale support. The LSVCs carried the full load of communicating with the unit holders . And this brings us to another problem: The typical LSVC had too many unit holders, because griffin gb01737 outfit ice red for iphone 4 each unit holder was effectively limited to a $5,000 investment as that was the level at which the tax credit went away. A single mailing to unit holders could cost in excess of $50,000.

Both levels of government seem to have given up on the LSVC program and are withdrawing their tax credits. Unfortunately, this is occurring at a time when the whole Canadian VC industry is imploding. The deal flow is only a fraction of what it was just five years ago, even though our government laboratories and universities are under great pressure to commercialize their technology and there is no shortage of entrepreneurs.

A replacement program well worth investigating is the flow-through share (FTS) program that has been used for years in the mining and resource industries. As its name implies, it allows the flow of losses from non-profitable corporations griffin gb01737 outfit ice red for iphone 4 to corporations and individuals that have taxes to pay. It also allows the buyers of the FTSs to participate in any upside potential of the companies selling them.

The federal government first introduced the FTS program in the mid-1950s, though the tax laws governing it have repeatedly changed since then. What is so attractive about the program is that it seems to work, perhaps for the simple reason that it has been around for so long that any bugs in the system have long been shaken out. It has withstood the test of time. It does not send people to jail. It seems to achieve the same goals as the LSVC program has been striving for without all the confusion and bells and whistles. Maybe that is why we have a robust mining industry but a poor record in technology commercialization.

Denzil Doyle’s involvement in Ottawa’s high technology industry goes back to the early 1960s when he established a sales office for Digital Equipment Corporation, a Boston-based firm that had just developed the world’s first minicomputer. The Canadian operation quickly evolved into a multi-faceted subsidiary. When he left the company in 1981, Canadian sales exceeded $160 million and its employment exceeded 1,500. In his next career, Doyle built a consulting and investment company, , that not only helped emerging companies, but built companies of its own. In recognition of his contributions to Canada’s high technology industry, he was awarded an honourary Doctorate of Engineering by Carleton University in 1981 and a membership in the Order of Canada in 1995.

Motorola v3 razr internal external lcd set Top 12 lies angels tell

By Frank Peters

Angel investors are among the leading sources of funding for many technology firms. Knowing how these investors think and evaluate a possible investment is motorola v3 razr internal external lcd set therefore vital for any tech start up seeking funding.

With a nod to  and his , I offer my Top 12 Lies Angels Tell. When I showed a draft to my angel friend Malcolm, he turned to me and said, “wow, this is really cynical!” So let me acknowledge that first.

1. “That was a good presentation!”

I have to say something positive, but you’re not getting me to write a cheque. The fact is, most funding pitches are terrible; they’re more product pitches with an appeal for money tacked on at the end.

Passion, yes; every entrepreneur has heard by now they must show great enthusiasm for their endeavor, but show me how I can get my money back someday, too. Who will acquire you? Are you going to raise venture capital that will keep me in the deal for six, seven, eight, nine years? Or are you aware of motorola v3 razr internal external lcd set the new trend towards early exits? Show me how I can get my money back in three to five years and even I’ll be saying, “That was a good presentation!”

2. “Fix these few issues and come back in six months.”

This is so much easier to say to the entrepreneur instead of, “You blew it, you’re too early.” Worst of all, I probably mean it when I say it even though I know the chances of an entrepreneur re‐entering the process is infinitely small, because next time I see you, something will nag at me: “Wasn’t there something flawed with this deal?” You only have one chance to make a first impression. This should remind you that Life’s Not Fair.

3. “We offer more than just money.”

Like referrals to industry contacts, but motorola v3 razr internal external lcd set all our industry contacts have retired by now.

4. “I don’t think he’s coachable.”

Entrepreneurs can sometimes be cocky, even arrogant. But what’s really being said here is that the average angel wants to invest in deals where he can play in your sandbox, too. A self‐ assured entrepreneur is unlikely to look to me for guidance, so there’s no place for me in this deal.

5. “I can’t believe (name of big motorola v3 razr internal external lcd set company) isn’t already doing this.”

I still think big companies innovate.

6. “Let’s let him in to present and we can negotiate a lower pre‐money during due diligence.”

Maybe in 2006. Today though, just like in real estate, if a property is priced too high, no one will bid. We used to be able to generate interest among our fellow angels even if most felt it was too rich, but not in this economy. A deal must meet our sense of a reasonable pre‐money valuation to attract any interest at all. (See #10.)

7. “I’m looking to give back.”

I said this 10 years ago. It sounded so altruistic and, assuming I would make some money as an investor, why not accent the selfless side? Who would think in 10 years I wouldn’t make any money at angel investing?

8. “I’m in 18 deals.”

But how many are still alive today? And how long has it been since you wrote a cheque? At a recent regional angel conference, each group leader started off the session by introducing his network and sharing current trends, funding performance and membership growth. What was the most consistent comment from the leaders about their angel group members? “Tired and tapped out.” They’re waiting to see some exits.

9. “I’m concerned about your barriers to entry.”

I forget that it’s all about execution. My friend Bill Baker summarizes concisely, “Technology doesn’t matter anymore.”

10. “We’re not seeing any quality deals.”

Look in the mirror. The reason you’re not seeing any good deals is many fold, but most likely it’s a derivative of Tired and Tapped Out. (See # . This lament originated in 2008 well ahead of the economic downturn; was it an early indicator? When angels sit back and, instead of being proactive in finding good startups and making seed investments and mentoring the entrepreneurs, rely on a website’s online application to troll for investments, well, this is what you’ll hear. The paranoid corollary to #10 is, “All the good deals must be going somewhere else.”

11. “We’ve got an expedited process.”

You’ll be pulling your hair out in frustration over the time it takes to get a deal closed. First, it’s so difficult to find a deal lead, a champion within the angel group who will take the time to shepherd your startup through the process of pitching, rounding up interested members and doing due diligence. (See #8, Tired and Tapped Out.) But even more challenging for entrepreneurs, I see fewer member‐led deals coming into the process. A member‐led deal is when the angel brings in a deal that he’s been mentoring for six months to a year and in which he has made an investment. In most cases, member‐led deals generate instant credibility with the rest of the angel herd, which can really expedite the process. But without member‐led deals, the only deals we see are those thrown over the transom via the website online application; without a champion it’s easy for the angel to sit in judgment and complain. (See #10: We’re Not Seeing Any Good Deals.)

12. “Our group should be able to complete your funding needs just by itself.”

This last point was contributed by .

As part of our continuing series about the ecosystem necessary to bring technology to market, we asked entrepreneur and long-time angel investor Frank Peters to share some insights from his lengthy experience investing in startups.

Managing your cell phone bills – 3 quick Tips

As reported by the OTI in their latest survey and Canada’s Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications (CCTS),  Canadians still have the dubious record of being the most expensive cell phone market in the world and about overly bookmark php .

So what do we do?  One thing you can do as a Canadian cell phone subscriber is understand your cell phone plan to make sure you don’t end up facing bill shock woes.

Here are 3 quick tips that we find most clients misunderstand about their cell phone plans that you can’t afford not to know.

Given the service we provide in the industry at we have the pleasure of interacting with clients of all sizes.  What we have discovered, much like the CCTS report stated, is that a large reason for bill shock has to do with a lack of understanding or confusion clients face when it comes to the features of their cell phone plan.

1.    For instance, we often hear clients say that they have a total of 250 mins plus 100 mins for long distance.  If you have a plan with 250 mins with 100 long distance minutes, bookmark php you do NOT have a total of 350 mins, but rather 250 mins TOTAL of which you can use 100 mins Long Distance. This minor point is understood by few and the source of much frustration in the cell phone industry and of course one of the reasons for cell phone bill shock.

2.    With to our daily lives it is absolutely imperative that you understand what you can and can’t do with your data plan. We have said this time and time again, however, it still it’s worth repeating. The most important thing to avoid doing on your cell phone is watching video. Whether its live TV or YouTube videos this is a sure way to use up your data plan and start paying some heavy overages per MB, which can be as high as $5/MB. To determine how much data you need check out our blog –

3.    Roaming, Roaming, Roaming – Whenever you step out of your local area or home area, as it is also referred to, you are You can roam on your carrier’s network or another cell phone carriers’ network if your cell phone company doesn’t provide service there and the network is compatible.  These rules are governed by roaming agreements but the bottom line as a consumer is that you will be charged a higher rate per minute, to talk on your phone while roaming, sending a text or checking your email.  If you travel and your phone remains on, even if you don’t answer your phone and it goes to voice mail you would have still technically answered your phone.  Along the same lines, if you have your phone on and you receive an email or a text message you will also be using services and therefore face some charges. So here’s some advice, be aware if you are roaming or not and monitor your usage, purchase a travel pack if you know you will be out of your home area, which provides you with a fixed number of minutes or data pool at a lower per minute rate.  All the carriers offer packages like this and with a little pre-planning you can ensure that you don’t come home to a nasty bill shock.

So what else can you do?

Get help. If you have any questions feel free to drop us a line at myCELLmyTERMS and if you need a hand finding the give us a try.  One last thing, if you have a registered business and you don’t have your family members on your business cell phone plan, you are wasting a great opportunity to as bookmark php well as get a lot more value.  Either way we can help so give us a shot.

Sony ericsson ms 410 snap on speaker stand silver Spammers can be quite creative

Spammers can be quite creative

By Mathew Nisbet

Spammers will try anything to sony ericsson ms 410 snap on speaker stand silver get their spam past your filters and into your inbox. We’ve seen many tricks involving random text hidden in the body, use of images, a message body with nothing but a link to the main message somewhere on the web. This example is one of the more elaborate (but ultimately futile) attempts that I’ve seen.

Recently we have been seeing a run of emails that pretend to be informing the recipient that they have a number of “unread” or “important” messages waiting for them on a well known social network. Over a 3 day period, between October 24 and 26, we saw roughly 18,500 of these. Since then the volume has dropped to less than 100 per day, but we are still seeing them.

The use of a well known social media brand name is the first part of the approach to bypass filters. The message copies the format of common legitimate email subjects and cannot be detected based on a signature related to the subject alone. It is also a piece of social engineering, to try and entice an unsuspecting user into opening the email.

On opening the email, you can immediately see that the email has nothing to do with the social network mentioned in the subject line, but is instead spam trying to get people to buy pharmaceuticals.

At first glance this looks like image spam (where the “text” is actually part of an image), which is usually an attempt to make it readable by humans but not computers. However, in this case there are no images in the email. If we look at the email with html rendering turned off, the plain text section displays a string sony ericsson ms 410 snap on speaker stand silver of legitimate links to genuine companies (which is most likely an attempt to poison spam filters) followed by seemingly random text.

However, if we look at the rendered html again, but this time highlight all the text in the mail, you can see the same, seemingly random, text.

This sony ericsson ms 410 snap on speaker stand silver means that the text isn’t random at all, but is instead intended to disguise the real text of the email, making it much harder to automatically recognize certain words. The use of html tags to change background and font colours allows the spammers to make only the desired characters visible to humans. To a machine, it still appears as simple text in html format, thus making it very difficult for standard filters to spot words. In this case the use of html also makes what appears to be a green cross image.

Spammers can be really creative in their approaches to getting messages through to people. In this case the fact that, aside from a few links, there is no recognizable text in the message automatically makes it suspicious. More advanced techniques, like contrast analysis, can be used to allow a computer to identify that some letters would not be visible to humans, making it possible for the computer to analyze the real message and stop it from reaching any potential victims.
