Nokia 1280 Alcatel-Lucent to Launch 100 Gbps Optical Networking Technology

alcatel Alcatel-Lucent announced on Wednesday that they are going to launch 100 gigabits per second optical networking technology. 100 Gbps wavelength means  that the technology can transfer more than 100,000 MP3 files in 60 seconds or more than 15,000 HDTV channels streamed live. The company said they are using its  nokia 1280 Next-Generation Coherent technology. The optical gear is designed to handle the bandwidth that is required for Web video, file sharing and movie downloads and the company already sold 100 gbps equipment to a customer.

The Next generation Coherent technology has gone through trials with more than 20 service providers. Alcatel-Lucent is trying to compete with Cisco to get first-mover advantage. On the other hand, Cisco last month bought CoreOptics, who develops 100 Gbps transmission technology. Cisco said that the new technology from CoreOptics will allow the service providers to offer with 100 Gbps gear. The 100 gbps optical gear is the brainchild of Lucent's high end network architecture. Alcatel-Lucent also claims that the new technology is compatible also with slower carrier equipment operating at 10 and 40 Gbps.

Fido unlock code by imei Free App Fridays: Writing

Writers: we're fido unlock code by imei a tortured bunch. And with our Macs and our iPhones and iPads in hand, we can do a lot of damage. Heck, there's a whole bunch of great writing apps out there designed specifically to help fuel our creative fires. They say that writing may be a dead trade, but these free apps definitely prove that writing is still alive--especially in our hearts.

All cheesiness aside, here are three great, totally free apps that'll help stimulate your mind, inspire your creative, and help you stay focused on that Sci-Fi novel you're writing in your basement. Remember, every writer needs a toolbox, and we just have ours stocked with Apple products.

Mac

To stick with the theme, we’re writing this column in our Bean word processing application. For writers, the hardest part about the job is sitting down in our seats and pumping out sentences. Sometimes, the inspiration just isn’t there, or our minds are off wandering about the most inane things. We found that the best practice for churning out written content is writing on an empty word processor--kind of like what writing with a type writer used to be like. Microsoft Word’s busy toolbar (and soon to be even busier with the next Office update, which contains the infamous fido unlock code by imei “ribbon”) can be very distracting when you’re trying to write out your next novel--or your dissertation. Bean is most definitely a veritable solution, as it is a very simple word processing application free of distractions, with just  the right amount of options you need to put together a paper.

iPad

If you’re managed to master typing on the iPad (and have somehow, miraculously, designated the device for taking notes in your college-level engineering course), Sundry is a wonderful note taking application that comes chockfull with a variety of features, like an equation solver, the inclusion of a library of commonly used math symbols, voice recording and a whiteboard. This is the perfect app to have on your iPad if it serves a utilitarian purpose in your life.

iPhone

We all know that it’s kind of impossible to write down ideas while we’re driving. Sure, voice record is great, but transcribing your voice afterward can be a painful and grueling process--we still feel a little funky about hearing our interview voice played back to us. Dragon Dictation takes your spoken word and converts it into text, so you can easily dictate ideas to your iPhone or iPod touch, even if you just can’t find the time to sit down and write your ideas.

Motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor Alternative sites to check out on Quit Facebook Day

Alternative sites to check out on Quit Facebook Day

Happy Quit Facebook Day.

Think motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor of the endless invitation to Mafia Wars or pleas to search for a missing cow on Farmville, not the constant updates from friends who just have to tell the world that they “just can’t wait for Friday” or that a “Sausage, eggs and mee goreng and a cup of Nescafe Gold” really perked them up today. All that could come to an end.

Nestor Arellano

Last time I checked the , which officially starts today has only signed up 26,977 committed Facebook quitters out of the social networking site’s 400 million members. So good luck with that.

However, writer Steven Vaughan-Nichols has come up with a list of seven alternative sites that you might what to check out. We have his list here but you can also read the

WikiHow also has this step-by-step advice on Facebook-weary on how to kick the habbit – .

Here’s Steve’s list:

While this open-source project is still in beta, it’s an interesting take on social networking. Instead of being under the control of one company and one set of administrators, Appleseed works via a distributed server software package tied motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor together with the ASN (Appleseed Social Network).

That means that as a user, you select and log into an Appleseed site. Once there, you connect with friends, send messages, share photos and videos, join discussions and participate in all the usual social networking stuff. Don’t like the specific Appleseed site you’re on? Then sign up for a different one and, according to the site, “immediately reconnect with everyone in your network.”

Diaspora, for all the headlines it’s gotten, is still not much motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor more than an idea.

Technically, Diaspora sounds a lot like Appleseed. It’s also going to be built from open-source software, and it’s going to be a distributed network server application. The first Diaspora code release is slated for September.

Rather than being motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor a social network, Elgg is designed for companies and groups to run their own social networks.

You can either run your own Elgg installation — according to the Web site, the developers will be happy to help you — or you can host your site with a provider that specializes in Elgg sites. Starting later this summer, you’ll also be able to host it on Elgg.com itself.

While businesses and social groups may find Elgg interesting, it’s not really a Facebook competitor in and of itself.

Lorea describes itself as “a project to create secure social cybernetic systems, in which human networks will become simultaneously represented on a virtual shared world.” It’s an experimental social network that combines some aspects of social networking, such as communities and real-time updating a la Twitter, with blogging.

Lorea may be less a Facebook competitor than a site for programmers who want to explore the fundamental concepts of how social networks should work.

Unlike Appleseed and Diaspora, the Vodafone Group’s OneSocialWeb is not only hoping to become a social network itself, but also to be the focal point for all the other social networks you may belong to.

For example, if OneSocialWeb works as planned, it will provide the common infrastructure from which you can access all your friends’ information, photos, comments, etc., from Twitter, Facebook and other networks.

Of course, for this to work, the other social networks would have to agree to play by OneSocialWeb’s rules — and I suspect they won’t want to make it easy for users to jump from their own network to another.

Look for a public OneSocialWeb beta later this summer.

Like Elgg, Pligg is an open-source platform for building social networks. The key difference between the two is that Pligg is also a content management system.

Specifically, Pligg is a CMS that enables users to submit and vote on news articles, like Digg. Besides the usual up-or-down voting system, Pligg offers a chance to rate the articles using a five-star scale. While more than good enough for this kind of story-sharing, Pligg really isn’t going to be the basis of a Facebook-type network.

Here’s the good news: Pip.io is already up and running, and it is a real would-be Facebook competitor. Here’s the bad news: It is still very rough.

For instance, when Steve  asked it to find members of Pip.io whom he already knew by using his Gmail contact list, it instead offered to let him invite everyone on his thousand-plus address book to join him on Pip.io.

The interface, which owes more to Twitter than to Facebook, is easy to use. It also enables you to use other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter from Pip.io. In short, Pip.io is trying to be both a social network and a social network client.

It may, eventually, do quite well at all these jobs. But for now, it’s a work in progress.

Htc hero AT&T hole exposes iPad users’ e-mail addresses; hackers harvested data by tricking website

AT&T hole exposes iPad users' e-mail addresses

SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T Inc. on Wednesday htc hero acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.'s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted hacking attacks.

The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T's "3G" wireless Internet service.

It involved an insecure way that AT&T's website would prompt iPad users when they tried to log into their AT&T accounts through the devices. The site would supply users' e-mail addresses, to make log-ins easier, based on unique codes contained in the SIM cards inside their iPads. SIM cards are used to tell cell-phone networks which subscriber is trying to use the service.

The hacker group that htc hero claims to have discovered the weakness — the group calls itself Goatse Security — said it was able to trick AT&T's site into coughing up more than 114,000 e-mail addresses, including those apparently of famous media personalities and important government officials.

A representative for the group told The Associated Press late Wednesday that the group contacted AT&T and waited until the vulnerability was fixed before going public with the information. AT&T said the problem was fixed Tuesday but that it was alerted to it by a business customer.

Gawker Media Inc.'s Valleywag website earlier reported on the breach.

AT&T said it will htc hero notify all iPad users whose e-mail addresses may have been accessed.

"We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted," the company said in a statement.

AT&T noted that the only information hackers would have been able to steal using this attack were users' e-mail addresses. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts. Criminals could use that knowledge to trick them into opening e-mails that plant malicious software on their computers.

An Apple representative deferred requests for comment to AT&T.

Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since they went on sale two months ago. The iPad comes in two different flavors — one that only connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and another that also can connect through AT&T's "3G" cellular network. The Wi-Fi-only models aren't affected by the breach. Apple hasn't specified how many of each model it has htc hero sold.

AP Source: Cablevision, Charter put in bids to acquire cable company Bresnan Communications

AP Source: Cablevision, Charter bid for Bresnan

PHILADELPHIA — Some of the nation's largest cable companies are interested in buying Bresnan Communications, a mid-sized cable company operating in the West, a person familiar with the talks said.

The bidders include Cablevision Systems Corp. and Charter Communications Inc. Time Warner Cable Inc., based in New York, also put in a bid, but its offer did not survive the first round. The three are among the five largest U.S. cable companies.

Other bidders include Ascent Media Corp., a media services holding company in which media mogul John Malone has 30 percent voting control, cable company Suddenlink Communications and private investment firm TPG Capital.

The person was not authorized to comment publicly because the bidding is private, and asked not to be identified.

The bids range from $1.3 billion to around $1.7 billion.

The person said Providence Equity Partners, Bresnan's majority owner, is seeking to cash in on its investment after owning the cable company since 2003.

Cablevision, Charter, Time Warner Cable and TPG Capital declined to comment. Providence, Ascent and Suddenlink did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cable systems operated by Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp., which owns 30 percent of Bresnan, abut the areas served by Bresnan. Bresnan, based in Purchase, N.Y., has more than 320,000 customers in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah.

Privately held Bresnan ranks 17th among the largest subscription TV providers, which spans cable, satellite TV and phone companies that offer video, according to the National Cable and Telecommunications Association.

Cable pioneer Bill Bresnan, the founder of Bresnan Communications, died last year.

Shares of Cablevision, based in Bethpage, N.Y., rose 73 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $22.88 in afternoon trading. Charter, in St. Louis, was unchanged at $34.52. Time Warner Cable rose by $1.69 to $52.29. Comcast, based in Philadelphia, added 58 cents to $18.

Microsoft Office Web Apps: Why to use and Why not

Microsoft's going the Google way to offer its widely used and highly-priced Office Suite Online for free. The Redmond company offers free online office components that comprises Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote as a part of free online suite called Office Web Apps. That said, the online edition of the Microsoft Office is an substantial development for consumers in the current round of updates. Overtly, it projects Microsoft's commitment to cloud computing - - promoting applications online instead of desktop programs. On a broader perspective it seems the software giant is all set to take on the rivals such as Google and Zoho offering online office suites. With a week's time for the release of new version of traditional desktop Microsoft Office version - Office 2010, we decided on an extensive comparison with online version.  Before you set out to purchase the desktop version, you need to see whether the online version of Office Suite has enough to do with.

In order to use the free Office Web Suite you need to visit the office.live.com. To work on the new online Office you will need a free account for the company's broader Windows Live onilne service.

The Office Web Apps run smoothly on all major browsers - Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome. As is expected, the online version of Office suite lacks some of the local desktop version of Office. Microsoft is trying to ensure that the profitability of its Desktop suite is not compromised. Then, why did Microsoft launch the online Office Web Apps? The software major is draws a line between the two versions — referring the Office Web Apps as a companion to desktop Office for "light" work.

Let's take a look at the major pros and cons of using the Office Web Apps over Office 2010

Pros

User Interface

Online version of the Office suite wears a simpler look and feel than its desktop counterpart. It includes the Ribbon feature.

Storage

The new Web Apps boasts of a 25 gigabytes of free online storage for the documents, via a companion Microsoft online storage system called SkyDrive. The Office Web Apps produce documents that use the same file formats as the desktop programs. The desktop program gets fully accurate when it is opened in desktop Office. This is clearly fidelity. In the tests the claim is held true, at least on my Windows PC.

Features

  • The new version of desktop Office suite has several new features, but most of them are devoted to power users or corporate users. It isn't a big change as the predecessors.
  • Two web apps, Excel and OneNote allow multiple users to log on work on the same document togather.  The Excel online is a reduced version of the
  • The Office Web App use a variety of fonts and styles, insert and resize photos and create tables.
  • It allows you to view documents but not edit them on your iPhone or iPad. It also works with other mobile devices.

Apple's Magic Trackpad Revealed?

Engadget's Joshua Topolsky reports:

Of all the surprises we expected to hear about in the WWDC keynote, a multitouch trackpad peripheral didn't exactly pop into our brains. But - whoomp - here it is. What we appear to be looking at is a brand new input device that Apple has dreamed up which connects to desktops (and laptops, if you like) via Bluetooth, much like the Apple Keyboard......

For the full report visit here:

Moving to Mac: The Trackpad

Web Worker Daily's Scott Blitstein says:

One of my biggest concerns with my move to Mac was adjusting to a touchpad interface. I've used IBM ThinkPads for years and have grown accustomed to the TrackPoint. TrackPoints are getting scarce, though, and the Trackpad on the MacBook is a highly lauded feature. My friend Christelle even went so far as to call it life-changing. With praise like that, my expectations were high. How well does it stack up?....

Mac Or Windows: Making The Switch To MacBook

Embedded.com's Jack Ganssle says:

I've been lured by Steve Jobs siren song, at least for the laptop.

I have only been to an Apple store on two occasions, both recently, both after the iPad came to market. Each of those trips was both awful and fascinating.... I am still unsure how one actually goes about purchasing something....

....I like the idea of having native access to Unix, rather than a DOS command line shell, and the battle with Vista on my desktop left me unwilling to iterate that experience....

The MacBook is absurdly-priced... but it comes out of hibernation instantly... is very fast, and has seamless WiFi. The touchpad supports one, two, three, and even four-finger manipulation which is confusing at first, but greatly speeds navigation.

The machine, both physically and graphically, is simply beautiful, something that once would mean nothing to me. But my wife is an artist and she has instilled some level of appreciation for beauty in me....

For the full review visit here:

Larry Magid: Steve Jobs Is A National Treasure

Mercury News's Larry Magid says:

I don't always agree with Steve Jobs, especially with the level of control Apple exerts over iPhone and iPad developers. But that doesn't change the fact that the man is a national treasure. When the history of the 20th and 21st centuries is written in stone, I have no doubt that Jobs will take his place along with Albert Einstein and Henry Ford.

Why I Fired Steve Jobs

The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber says:

As Apple's CEO introduces his new iPhone today, and its market cap passes Microsoft's, the man who infamously fired him, John Sculley, tells The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber about his regrets, their rift and how their partnership could have worked: Jobs should have been CEO, and Sculley's boss, rather than the other way around. Plus, other 1985 board members on Jobs then and now, and where they are today.

Macintosh Portable Recalled

businessmirror.com's Presy Alba says:

In 1989 Apple's first attempt at making a laptop the Macintosh Portable was met with raves from critics but poor sales from the consumers because of the price issue. To be fair, it was very expensive because Apple spared no expense in the construction: it had all the bells and whistles of a desktop Macintosh and it was portable.

It featured cutting-edge design elements that virtually determined how laptops are designed today....

Why I Don't Like The Mac And Loved The Nissan GT-R

TG Daily's Rob Enderle says:

I can like and respect Apple but I've never personally been attracted to Apple products.

The closest was Apple's second generation iMac which I still think is one of the coolest PC designs of all time (though I wanted it in black). However I've often had a hard time articulating why I don't like Apple products. They are attractive, they are easy to use, they are expensive but I tend to buy expensive things, and people stand in lines to buy many of them.

Earlier this week I went on an Exotic Car Excursion where I got to drive a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Porsche, a Lotus, an Austin Martian, and a Nissan GT-R. This experience was put on by the San Jose outlet of an outfit that rents exotic cars to drive called Club Sportiva.....

I m going to give you my impressions of each car, which car was most like an Apple product (to me), and why I wouldn't buy one.

G8 and G20 must address online privacy

G8 and G20 must address online privacy

-It’s the least we can expect for our billion-dollar investment

It’s hard to imagine governments acting in citizens’ social media privacy best interests when they themselves often seem so inept in terms of integrating social media within their own respective environments. For every example of a government department success story using social media tools and principles, there always seems to be a counter-example that illustrates just how many elected leaders and civil servants still have their heads in the sand when it comes to Web 2.0 and beyond. All-staff Twitter bans and continued sequestering of data that could help the public in hierarchical and disconnected silos, anyone?

Despite our leaders’ difficulties in making social media the new normal for government-citizen interaction, the need for our elected officials to help facilitate the transition to a Web 2.0-based economy has never been greater.

Facebook, for example, has garnered more than its fair share of headlines over the past couple of years for its propensity to play fast and loose with the rules of privacy and confidentiality. To its credit, the Privacy Commissioner’s Office has stepped in and forced Facebook to up the level of its privacy game – a process that has set a global precedent and positioned Canada as a leader in understanding and implementing real-world online privacy/confidentiality standards.

But this is only one example among a pretty desolate landscape. There are precious few other examples of governments – Canadian or foreign – taking truly bold steps to force market-dominant companies like Facebook and Google to play nice when it comes to citizens’ private data. For the billion-plus dollars we’re “investing” in the G8 and G20 summits, it would be nice if we at least got some answers on how member governments – especially our own – intend to not only meet the challenge, but get and stay ahead of the rapidly advancing curve.

If governments at all levels fail to exercise at least some influence over the evolution of privacy standards in the Web 2.0 and post-Web 2.0 era, it’ll be left to profit-seeking ventures to determine what’s fair and appropriate for the rest of us. Enterprise leaders and consumers alike are right to shudder at the prospect of Mark Zuckerberg holding the keys to the privacy kingdom. If anything comes out of these meetings, it’ll be consensus on how to keep tech giants honest – and citizens protected.

The survey company found a definite link between online experience satisfcation and people heading to the auto showrooms for a test drive. However, in my story, Ryan Robinson, the company’s industry practice leader, reveals that a lot of car makers have their Web strategy all wrong.

“Of course buyers want to see beautiful Web sites. But the main reason the visit the sites is to get information that will help them make a purchasing decision,” he said. In other words: Flash is fine but we want functionality.

When asked to rank the site experience satisfaction on a scale of 100 to 1,000 respondents placed the following automakes in the top five position: Lexus (843); Mazada (825); Toyota (822); Suzuki (817) and Audi (80 .

The bottom five was made up of: Mitsubishi (777); GMC (775); Cadillac (766); Chrysler (760) and BMW (757).

Here’s what consumers are looking for in a good auto Web site:

Ease of navigation – Well laid out sites score high with consumers. Online users want to have easy access to features and information. People don’t like to drill down through layers of subject headings and pages.

A very popular site option is the “3-box layout”. It makes use of a permanent navigation bar at the top of the page that shows a few general sections that users can visit.

The middle section of the page could sport a “dynamic display.” This could be a rotating image of a car (probably the top of the line or most popular model). Parts of the machine could serve as navigational links or reveal outstanding features of the car when touched by a cursor.

“Data shown could relate to horse power, top speeds, or lease rates and rebates,” said Robinson.

The lower section of the page could include another row of permanent navigational buttons that provide a static link to less frequently searched sections.

Roll over menus revealing several navigational choices when simply touched by a cursor help reduce site clutter. This feature also cuts down the number of sections users need to click through.

Provide for browsing and comparison – The whole idea of using a Web site is to be able to browse and compare models without having to drive to the showroom and face the pressure from pushy salespeople.

Yet the J.D. Power survey revealed just 28 per cent of site visitors said they were unable to perform vehicle comparison on the Web sites. The survey also showed when vehicle comparison could not be made, overall Web satisfaction dropped to 759 from an average index score of 813 when comparison was possible.

Site visitors also wanted to be able to equip a vehicle online and then get a price quote on how much upgrades would add to the total cost of the vehicle.

Replace Flash with functionality –

Beautiful Web sites with sleek images and fancy videos may look great but consumers would rather have fast loading pages and useful applications.

Manufacturers need to strike a balance between Flash and functionality, according to the survey. Ultimately, buyers look for a site they can use, as opposed to one they can simply view.

Multi-tasking is the ticket – The site has to be relevant to the consumer. The survey shows online credit applications are no longer a novelty, but an expected option for online users.

Other options online customers want include:

- Scheduling a sales appointment (76 per cent);
- Completing a credit application (72 per cent);
- Requesting a price quote from dealer (66 per cent);
- Obtaining a brochure of a vehicle (58 per cent);
- Locating a vehicle at a dealership with an inventory locator tool (51 per cent);
- Access to local or independent dealer sites (38 per cent)
- Investigate discounts, sale offers or rebates (37 per cent)
- Use the search tool to help locate information (33 per cent)

Mobile Web access – Around 26 per cent of those aged 46 and below are looking for , according to Robinson.

“I think it will be increasingly important for manufacturers to develop sites specifically designed for the smaller smart phone screens,” he said.

As smart phones gain more features and functionality, he said, consumers will develop the habit of browsing for products on their handsets.

Walmart Offering Up iPhone 4 On Launch Day

Walmart

As Apple is preparing to meet a large demand for iPhone 4, Walmart can now be added to the list of distributors on the launch day of June 24, according to .

The reason for the move is an attempt to help Apple alleviate some of the stresses of good 'ol supply and demand, giving customers an opportunity to purchase the handset from multiple retail stores.  Best Buy and Radio Shack are also ramping up to offer up the newest iPhone on June 24 as well.

This would be the first time that Walmart will be selling the iPhone on a launch day of the device.  Before, only previous versions of the iPhone were made available by the company, much later on.  We all remember the of huge lines outside of AT&T and Apple Stores.

It should be noted though that Walmart will not be participating in pre-orders of the device, which are slated to start this coming Tuesday, through Apple as well as AT&T.

Prisoner Of iTunes - The iPad File Transfer Horror

The Register's John Lettice notes that the iPad is light, compact, reasonably capable for typing, and it has very decent battery life, which would be enough to convince him to take the device seriously for note-taking, document viewing and manipulation, and stop carrying his MacBook Air around all the time, were it not for the "you can check out, but you can't leave" dynamic that obtains.

"The iPad is a conflicted machine," Lettice opines - a media consumption device and potential productivity tool, but also considerable potential to become an infuriating device to use - in particular the difficulty in exchanging files, the iTunes tether, and the iPad's status as a big iPhone that can't make phone calls.

[Editor's note: some of these issues appear to be addressed by the iOS iPhone/iPad operating system Steve Jobs announced yesterday, but not the file import/export constipation.]

The author observes that "It's possible to work around some of the iPad's insane file sharing restrictions using Avatron Software's Air Sharing HD, which is as essential from the point of view of sanity preservation as it is for getting stuff done."

The first one - Tonya's "Take Control of iPad Basics" - is totally free, and the other three pick up where it leaves off, helping you use your iPad as a media machine (Jeff Carlson's "Take Control of Media on Your iPad"), do all sorts of productive work (Joe Kissell's "Take Control of Working with Your iPad"), and go under the hood with networking and security details (Glenn Fleishman's "Take Control of iPad Networking & Security").

Xcode Projects - Publish a Book on the App Store - Quick and Easy

Xcode Projects - Publish a Book on the App Store

[Press Release]

Independent developer Chris Mayer has announced the release and immediate availability of three complete Xcode projects - Basic Book App for iPhone, Universal Basic Book App for iPhone and iPad, and Advanced Book App for iPhone. The 'Book' category is the fastest growing sector of the App Store. The iPhone and iPad have revolutionised the way people read. No longer are people carrying a book with them - they instead carry a whole library in their pockets.

Specifically designed to help authors publish their books on iPhone and iPad devices, these projects are ready-made Apps, just waiting for content to be loaded in HTML format. Anyone who can edit a HTML document can publish a book on iPhone. Pages can be created in any HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, and may use a variety of fonts and styles, as well as images within the pages.

Features:
(*) Supports standard HTML format pages, create using any popular webpage editor
(*) Include a variety of fonts and styles, and show images within your pages
(*) Loads audio for each page in .m4a, .mp3, or .wav format - for spoken pages or sound effects
(*) Saves progress through the book
(*) Flip pages forwards and backwards with the swipe of a finger
(*) 'Credits / How To Use' screen - accessable from an info button on the launch screen
(*) Heavily commented code - see exactly how it all works

The Tech Night Owl: The WWDC Report: An iPhone or a Tricorder?

In the days of the original Star Trek TV show in the 1960s, the crew of the starship Enterprise would explore a new world equipped with a handheld computer known as a Tricorder. Hewlett-Packard spends $1.6M on 1Q lobbying

WASHINGTON — Hewlett-Packard Co. spent $1.6 million to lobby the U.S. government in the first quarter on a smorgasbord of issues including federal spending on technology, enforcement of immigration laws and health care reform.

The amount was nearly double HP's $840,000 lobbying tab from the first quarter of 2009. HP spent $710,000 on lobbying in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Kristy Sternhell, formerly a counsel to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, was among the people who lobbied on behalf of HP, which is the world's biggest technology company by revenue.

HP said in its latest lobbying-disclosure form, filed with the House clerk's office, that it lobbied Congress and various government agencies. Those agencies included the Homeland Security and Labor departments, which HP lobbied on immigration-related issues, including legislation involving the creation of a computer network to verify that workers in the U.S. are legally able to work. Other agencies included the Health and Human Services department and the Federal Reserve System.

HP's $1.6 million tab ranked among the highest for technology companies in the latest period.

Other big-time Silicon Valley tech firms spent less. Google Inc. spent $1.4 million in the first quarter to lobby the federal government on issues including its decision to stop censoring search results in China, and Oracle Corp. spent $1.1 million, in part on regulatory issues concerning its recent acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

However, Microsoft Corp., consistently one of tech's biggest lobbying spenders, spent more than HP — $1.7 million on lobbying in the latest period.
