AT&T hole exposes iPad users' e-mail addresses
SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T Inc. on Wednesday htc hero acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.'s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted hacking attacks.
The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T's "3G" wireless Internet service.
It involved an insecure way that AT&T's website would prompt iPad users when they tried to log into their AT&T accounts through the devices. The site would supply users' e-mail addresses, to make log-ins easier, based on unique codes contained in the SIM cards inside their iPads. SIM cards are used to tell cell-phone networks which subscriber is trying to use the service.
The hacker group that htc hero claims to have discovered the weakness — the group calls itself Goatse Security — said it was able to trick AT&T's site into coughing up more than 114,000 e-mail addresses, including those apparently of famous media personalities and important government officials.
A representative for the group told The Associated Press late Wednesday that the group contacted AT&T and waited until the vulnerability was fixed before going public with the information. AT&T said the problem was fixed Tuesday but that it was alerted to it by a business customer.
Gawker Media Inc.'s Valleywag website earlier reported on the breach.
AT&T said it will htc hero notify all iPad users whose e-mail addresses may have been accessed.
"We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted," the company said in a statement.
AT&T noted that the only information hackers would have been able to steal using this attack were users' e-mail addresses. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts. Criminals could use that knowledge to trick them into opening e-mails that plant malicious software on their computers.
An Apple representative deferred requests for comment to AT&T.
Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since they went on sale two months ago. The iPad comes in two different flavors — one that only connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and another that also can connect through AT&T's "3G" cellular network. The Wi-Fi-only models aren't affected by the breach. Apple hasn't specified how many of each model it has htc hero sold.

PHILADELPHIA — Some of the nation's largest cable companies are interested in buying Bresnan Communications, a mid-sized cable company operating in the West, a person familiar with the talks said.
The bidders include Cablevision Systems Corp. and Charter Communications Inc. Time Warner Cable Inc., based in New York, also put in a bid, but its offer did not survive the first round. The three are among the five largest U.S. cable companies.
Other bidders include Ascent Media Corp., a media services holding company in which media mogul John Malone has 30 percent voting control, cable company Suddenlink Communications and private investment firm TPG Capital.
The person was not authorized to comment publicly because the bidding is private, and asked not to be identified.
The bids range from $1.3 billion to around $1.7 billion.
The person said Providence Equity Partners, Bresnan's majority owner, is seeking to cash in on its investment after owning the cable company since 2003.
Cablevision, Charter, Time Warner Cable and TPG Capital declined to comment. Providence, Ascent and Suddenlink did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Cable systems operated by Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp., which owns 30 percent of Bresnan, abut the areas served by Bresnan. Bresnan, based in Purchase, N.Y., has more than 320,000 customers in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah.
Privately held Bresnan ranks 17th among the largest subscription TV providers, which spans cable, satellite TV and phone companies that offer video, according to the National Cable and Telecommunications Association.
Cable pioneer Bill Bresnan, the founder of Bresnan Communications, died last year.
Shares of Cablevision, based in Bethpage, N.Y., rose 73 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $22.88 in afternoon trading. Charter, in St. Louis, was unchanged at $34.52. Time Warner Cable rose by $1.69 to $52.29. Comcast, based in Philadelphia, added 58 cents to $18.

The MacBook is absurdly-priced... but it comes out of hibernation instantly... is very fast, and has seamless WiFi. The touchpad supports one, two, three, and even four-finger manipulation which is confusing at first, but greatly speeds navigation.
The machine, both physically and graphically, is simply beautiful, something that once would mean nothing to me. But my wife is an artist and she has instilled some level of appreciation for beauty in me....

Why I Don't Like The Mac And Loved The Nissan GT-R

-It’s the least we can expect for our billion-dollar investment
It’s hard to imagine governments acting in citizens’ social media privacy best interests when they themselves often seem so inept in terms of integrating social media within their own respective environments. For every example of a government department success story using social media tools and principles, there always seems to be a counter-example that illustrates just how many elected leaders and civil servants still have their heads in the sand when it comes to Web 2.0 and beyond. All-staff Twitter bans and continued sequestering of data that could help the public in hierarchical and disconnected silos, anyone?
Despite our leaders’ difficulties in making social media the new normal for government-citizen interaction, the need for our elected officials to help facilitate the transition to a Web 2.0-based economy has never been greater.

Facebook, for example, has garnered more than its fair share of headlines over the past couple of years for its propensity to play fast and loose with the rules of privacy and confidentiality. To its credit, the Privacy Commissioner’s Office has stepped in and forced Facebook to up the level of its privacy game – a process that has set a global precedent and positioned Canada as a leader in understanding and implementing real-world online privacy/confidentiality standards.
But this is only one example among a pretty desolate landscape. There are precious few other examples of governments – Canadian or foreign – taking truly bold steps to force market-dominant companies like Facebook and Google to play nice when it comes to citizens’ private data. For the billion-plus dollars we’re “investing” in the G8 and G20 summits, it would be nice if we at least got some answers on how member governments – especially our own – intend to not only meet the challenge, but get and stay ahead of the rapidly advancing curve.
If governments at all levels fail to exercise at least some influence over the evolution of privacy standards in the Web 2.0 and post-Web 2.0 era, it’ll be left to profit-seeking ventures to determine what’s fair and appropriate for the rest of us. Enterprise leaders and consumers alike are right to shudder at the prospect of Mark Zuckerberg holding the keys to the privacy kingdom. If anything comes out of these meetings, it’ll be consensus on how to keep tech giants honest – and citizens protected.Â

Car buyers chose function over flash in auto Web sites
What makes a great auto maker Web site?
Flashy car pictures? Videos of speeding cars or SUVs truckin’ along mud covered rought roads? Hardly. According a recent survey conducted by J.D. Power and Associates Canada.
The survey company found a definite link between online experience satisfcation and people heading to the auto showrooms for a test drive. However, in my story, Ryan Robinson, the company’s industry practice leader, reveals that a lot of car makers have their Web strategy all wrong.
“Of course buyers want to see beautiful Web sites. But the main reason the visit the sites is to get information that will help them make a purchasing decision,” he said. In other words: Flash is fine but we want functionality.
When asked to rank the site experience satisfaction on a scale of 100 to 1,000 respondents placed the following automakes in the top five position: Lexus (843); Mazada (825); Toyota (822); Suzuki (817) and Audi (80

The bottom five was made up of: Mitsubishi (777); GMC (775); Cadillac (766); Chrysler (760) and BMW (757).
Here’s what consumers are looking for in a good auto Web site:
Ease of navigation – Well laid out sites score high with consumers. Online users want to have easy access to features and information. People don’t like to drill down through layers of subject headings and pages.
A very popular site option is the “3-box layout”. It makes use of a permanent navigation bar at the top of the page that shows a few general sections that users can visit.
The middle section of the page could sport a “dynamic display.” This could be a rotating image of a car (probably the top of the line or most popular model). Parts of the machine could serve as navigational links or reveal outstanding features of the car when touched by a cursor.
“Data shown could relate to horse power, top speeds, or lease rates and rebates,” said Robinson.
The lower section of the page could include another row of permanent navigational buttons that provide a static link to less frequently searched sections.
Roll over menus revealing several navigational choices when simply touched by a cursor help reduce site clutter. This feature also cuts down the number of sections users need to click through.
Provide for browsing and comparison – The whole idea of using a Web site is to be able to browse and compare models without having to drive to the showroom and face the pressure from pushy salespeople.
Yet the J.D. Power survey revealed just 28 per cent of site visitors said they were unable to perform vehicle comparison on the Web sites. The survey also showed when vehicle comparison could not be made, overall Web satisfaction dropped to 759 from an average index score of 813 when comparison was possible.
Site visitors also wanted to be able to equip a vehicle online and then get a price quote on how much upgrades would add to the total cost of the vehicle.
Replace Flash with functionality –
Beautiful Web sites with sleek images and fancy videos may look great but consumers would rather have fast loading pages and useful applications.
Manufacturers need to strike a balance between Flash and functionality, according to the survey. Ultimately, buyers look for a site they can use, as opposed to one they can simply view.
Multi-tasking is the ticket – The site has to be relevant to the consumer. The survey shows online credit applications are no longer a novelty, but an expected option for online users.
Other options online customers want include:
- Scheduling a sales appointment (76 per cent);
- Completing a credit application (72 per cent);
- Requesting a price quote from dealer (66 per cent);
- Obtaining a brochure of a vehicle (58 per cent);
- Locating a vehicle at a dealership with an inventory locator tool (51 per cent);
- Access to local or independent dealer sites (38 per cent)
- Investigate discounts, sale offers or rebates (37 per cent)
- Use the search tool to help locate information (33 per cent)
Mobile Web access – Around 26 per cent of those aged 46 and below are looking for , according to Robinson.
“I think it will be increasingly important for manufacturers to develop sites specifically designed for the smaller smart phone screens,” he said.
As smart phones gain more features and functionality, he said, consumers will develop the habit of browsing for products on their handsets.

Walmart Offering Up iPhone 4 On Launch Day
As Apple is preparing to meet a large demand for iPhone 4, Walmart can now be added to the list of distributors on the launch day of June 24, according to .
The reason for the move is an attempt to help Apple alleviate some of the stresses of good 'ol supply and demand, giving customers an opportunity to purchase the handset from multiple retail stores. Best Buy and Radio Shack are also ramping up to offer up the newest iPhone on June 24 as well.
This would be the first time that Walmart will be selling the iPhone on a launch day of the device. Before, only previous versions of the iPhone were made available by the company, much later on. We all remember the of huge lines outside of AT&T and Apple Stores.
It should be noted though that Walmart will not be participating in pre-orders of the device, which are slated to start this coming Tuesday, through Apple as well as AT&T.

The Register's John Lettice notes that the iPad is light, compact, reasonably capable for typing, and it has very decent battery life, which would be enough to convince him to take the device seriously for note-taking, document viewing and manipulation, and stop carrying his MacBook Air around all the time, were it not for the "you can check out, but you can't leave" dynamic that obtains.
"The iPad is a conflicted machine," Lettice opines - a media consumption device and potential productivity tool, but also considerable potential to become an infuriating device to use - in particular the difficulty in exchanging files, the iTunes tether, and the iPad's status as a big iPhone that can't make phone calls.
[Editor's note: some of these issues appear to be addressed by the iOS iPhone/iPad operating system Steve Jobs announced yesterday, but not the file import/export constipation.]
The author observes that "It's possible to work around some of the iPad's insane file sharing restrictions using Avatron Software's Air Sharing HD, which is as essential from the point of view of sanity preservation as it is for getting stuff done."

The Register's Cade Metz reports that Steve Jobs has borrowed another iName from Cisco. But this time, he got permission.
At WWDC yesterday Jobs announced that the iPhone OS has been renamed iOS - a name owned by Cisco as a trademark on the acronym IOS, short for its Internetwork Operating System, but Apple has secured approval with a statement from Cisco readin "Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad."

The Advanced Book Reader App features many enhancements, including animated page turns, automatic bookmarking, so when you launch the app you can continue reading from where you left off, as well as intuitive controls. Simply swipe the screen with a finger to flip between pages.

The Tech Night Owl: The WWDC Report: An iPhone or a Tricorder?
In the days of the original Star Trek TV show in the 1960s, the crew of the starship Enterprise would explore a new world equipped with a handheld computer known as a Tricorder. Hewlett-Packard spends $1.6M to lobby government in 1Q, one of highest spends in industry
Hewlett-Packard spends $1.6M on 1Q lobbying
WASHINGTON — Hewlett-Packard Co. spent $1.6 million to lobby the U.S. government in the first quarter on a smorgasbord of issues including federal spending on technology, enforcement of immigration laws and health care reform.
The amount was nearly double HP's $840,000 lobbying tab from the first quarter of 2009. HP spent $710,000 on lobbying in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Kristy Sternhell, formerly a counsel to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, was among the people who lobbied on behalf of HP, which is the world's biggest technology company by revenue.
HP said in its latest lobbying-disclosure form, filed with the House clerk's office, that it lobbied Congress and various government agencies. Those agencies included the Homeland Security and Labor departments, which HP lobbied on immigration-related issues, including legislation involving the creation of a computer network to verify that workers in the U.S. are legally able to work. Other agencies included the Health and Human Services department and the Federal Reserve System.
HP's $1.6 million tab ranked among the highest for technology companies in the latest period.
Other big-time Silicon Valley tech firms spent less. Google Inc. spent $1.4 million in the first quarter to lobby the federal government on issues including its decision to stop censoring search results in China, and Oracle Corp. spent $1.1 million, in part on regulatory issues concerning its recent acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
However, Microsoft Corp., consistently one of tech's biggest lobbying spenders, spent more than HP — $1.7 million on lobbying in the latest period.

Alcatel-Lucent announced on Wednesday that they are going to launch 100 gigabits per second optical networking technology. 100 Gbps wavelength means that the technology can transfer more than 100,000 MP3 files in 60 seconds or more than 15,000 HDTV channels streamed live. The company said they are using its nokia 1280 Next-Generation Coherent technology. The optical gear is designed to handle the bandwidth that is required for Web video, file sharing and movie downloads and the company already sold 100 gbps equipment to a customer.
