The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) announced its at Toronto’s Mesh Marketing conference Nov. 17. Canada’s domain registration authority will give away a total of $20,000 – awarding a $5,000 prize to Web sites in four different categories. Aside from Small Business, awards will be given for E-Learning, Not-For-Profit, and Web Technology.
CIRA will start taking entries in January and close in March, says img batteries jpg Jennifer Austin, senior manager of communications. The winner will be announced at Toronto-based Mesh conference.
“We would encourage anyone with a small business dot-ca Web site to apply,†Austin says. “That could go a long way for small businesses to help with their Web site and their Web presence.â€
A panel of judges is soon to be assembled to better determine the criteria for the awards. CIRA hopes to nab notable judges in the Internet community and specific to the category areas. CIRA is looking for the winning small business Web site to be innovative, have a demonstrated impact on the growth of business, and generate a measurable return on investment.
“The Web site doesn’t have to change the world,†Austin says. “It does have to make an impact in the community that the business is operating in, whether that’s a vertical, img batteries jpg or a physical location.â€
Even small businesses who don’t claim the top prize could get some recognition for their entries. CIRA may profile some finalists as well, Austin says. “It’s still being worked out.â€
The awards are an opportunity for CIRA to give back to Canada’s Internet community, she adds. The authority has a mandate to do more than just register domains, img batteries jpg but also to engage with the community and recognize good work.

With the finicky economy and rising prices, things have not been good for many small and medium sized enterprises.
But as the year closes, it might bring some warm thoughts to business owners that they can take advantage of changes in Revenue Canada’s computer capital cost allowance (CCA) regulations. The CCA is a means by which Canadians may claim depreciation expense on tech products they have purchased for their business.
The CCA rate for computer equipment acquired after January 27, 2009 and before February 2011 has been increased from 55 per cent to 100 per cent with no half-year rule.
The half-year rule allows tax payers to claim only half of the CCA available on n asset in the year that asset was purchased. Doing away with the rule means businesses can claim a full-write in the first tax year that CCA deductions are available.
Depreciable assets come under various CCA rate class. Class 55 with a CCA rate of 100 per cent include general purpose electronic data processing equipment (commonly referred to as computer hardware) and systems software required for that equipment. The class also covers ancillary data-processing equipment, according to Revenue Canada.
To qualify for Class 52 allowance, Revenue Canada says the asset must:
- Be situated in Canada
- Not have been used, or acquired for use, for any purpose before it is acquired by the taxpayer
- Be acquired by the taxpayer:
- for use in a business carried on by the taxpayer in Canada or for the purposes of earning income from property situated in Canada; or
- for lease by the taxpayer to a lessee for use by the lessee in a business carried on by the lessee in Canada or for the purpose of earning income from property situated in Canada.
But is a 100 per cent write off what your business really needs at this point?
A tax strategy that small business owners can use to reduce their income tax is not to claim the full CCA in the year that it occurs.
Remember the CAA is not a mandatory tax deduction. You can use as much or as little as you wish of your CCA claim for a particular year. You don’t need to take full CCA benefit in a year that you have little taxable income.
With this strategy, business owners can carry forward any unused CCA portion to offset a larger income tax bill in the future.

On the third one, however, the display was completely shattered after a loud pop. That’s a sound I’m personally familiar with: My current iPhone 3G’s motorola rokr e8 display has broken two times in the same way.
It’s not surprising that the Cupertino company is releasing a protective case of their own called the “bumper”. Because now, unlike older iPhones where there’s one side that has a display and one side that’s plastic or aluminum—where you don’t care if it gets messed up or cracked—now both sides are glass. Which means both sides are susceptible to breaking. My iPhone was dropped on its display face two times and broke two times. I lost count on the times it dropped on its back.
This new material—20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic—still shatters when dropped. But is it scratch-proof? More scratch-resistant? The test doesn’t say. Having both sides be more scratch resistant—the backs of everyone’s phones is most likely much more scuffed than the front—is a good thing, if it really is. But having the phone, as a whole, be more likely to break from drops is a bad thing.

I agree with Steve that the all-glass-and-steel design is beautiful, but its beauty is pointless if I have to hide it in order to protect it from drops. There’s a key difference between hardness and brittleness, and although the new glass screen might be harder, it doesn’t mean it’s not that brittle and likely to shatter when dropped on.

Motorola sidekick lx 2009 Apple’s iPhone 4 "Retina" Display Claims Spark Controversy
In the wake of Monday’s iPhone 4 introduction, Apple has been motorola sidekick lx 2009 the target of sharp criticism from some industry watchers and rivals looking to dispute some of the claims it made regarding the handset’s new Retina Display.
Apple says new display sports four times as many pixels as that of the existing iPhone 3GS, with a resolution of 960×640, 326 pixels per inch, and backed by the same advanced IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology used in the iPad. During his keynote presentation at the company’s annual developers conference, chief executive Steve Jobs asserted that the resolution of the new display was higher than “the limit of the human retina,” which he noted as 300 ppi at 10- to 12-inches away.
In response to this, display expert Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, contributed to an article over at PC World rebutting the claim. AppleInsider has previously referenced Soneira’s extensive display critiques of both the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS. In his most recent analysis, Soneira claims that the actual distinguishable resolution of the human retina is 477 ppi at a distance of 12 inches. According to his calculations, the iPhone 4’s display motorola sidekick lx 2009 wouldn’t be a true retina display unless it was designed to be held at a distance of at least 18 inches from the eye, much farther than standard use for a mobile handset.
Soneira’s comments were picked up by several major news outlets, including Reuters, Fox News and Wired, some of which expanded on those claims to accuse Apple of false advertising.
As numerous blogs sites continued coverage of the matter, some of the facts became further distorted, causing an eventual backlash against the criticism of false marketing. Digital Society, a non-profit think tank, alleged that Jobs during the keynote falsely propped the iPhone 4’s dispay with graphics that show an iPhone 4 resolution as high as 815 ppi, and up to 489 ppi on a separate Apple advertisement.
Adding to the controversy was global electronics maker Samsung, who joined the conversation by touting its AMOLED technology, which will be used in its recently announced Galaxy S, as superior to the newly released Retina Display. A spokesperson for the electronics maker told The Korea Herald (link 6) that although the iPhone has a higher resolution, “visibility difference is only 3 to 5 percent,” while consuming significantly more power than motorola sidekick lx 2009 its own technology.
The LCD-IPS display used in the iPhone 4 is manufactured by LG, one of Samsung’s primary rivals. For its part, research firm iSuppli believes that the competition between Apple and Google is bound spill over into a battle between LCD-IPS displays and AMOLED displays. Vinita Jakhanwal, a principal analyst for the firm, similarly sided with Apple, saying that while the Nexus One “upped the ante” for handset displays with its AMOLED display, the iPhone 4 “has raised the bar even further” with its LCD-IPS Retina display.
