Apple’s iTunes App Store now lists more than 10,000 universal and bookmark php iPad specific apps, with nearly 1,000 more being added every week.

According to a report by Mac Stories, Apple’s iPad library includes over 2,100 games and includes a broad mix of content from digital books to productivity and news apps to rich media apps.

Around 78% of iPad specific titles are paid apps, echoing the findings of an earlier report by Moblix that cited an 80% paid mix in April when the iPad store first opened with around 3,000 titles.

A slightly smaller percentage (around 75%) of the iPhone’s 225,000 titles are also paid apps. This indicates iPad users are more willing to pay for premium content.

Faster growth, despite Apple’s approval process
According to a report by PadGadget, growth of the iPad apps library has outpaced the original iPhone App Store, bookmark php which took almost five months to reach the 10,000 app milestone in 2008.
The site also notes that Google’s Android Market took almost 11 months to reach 10,000 apps; that store has no approval process in place screening apps for performance as advertised or other quality control issues.

Google currently forbids Android tablet makers from putting Android Market on their non-smartphone devices, so there is no official market for Android-based tablet software comparable to what Apple maintains for iPad users.

In just 63 days, Apple’s curated App Store for iPad has taken third place after iPhone apps and Android smartphone apps. PadGadget notes that HP’s Palm/webOS, RIM’s BlackBerry App World, bookmark php and Nokia’s Symbian platform all boast fewer than 7,000 apps.

Alcatel-Lucent announced on Wednesday that they are going to launch 100 gigabits per second optical networking technology. 100 Gbps wavelength means  that the technology can transfer more than 100,000 blackberry 8300 8310 8320 face plate MP3 files in 60 seconds or more than 15,000 HDTV channels streamed live. The company said they are using its  Next-Generation Coherent technology. The optical gear is designed to handle the bandwidth that is required for Web video, file sharing and movie downloads and the company already sold 100 gbps equipment to a customer.

The Next generation Coherent technology has gone through trials with more than 20 service providers. Alcatel-Lucent is trying to compete with Cisco to get first-mover advantage. On the other hand, Cisco last month bought CoreOptics, who develops 100 Gbps transmission technology. Cisco said that the new technology from CoreOptics will allow the service providers to offer with 100 Gbps gear. The 100 gbps optical gear is the brainchild of Lucent’s high end network architecture. Alcatel-Lucent also claims that the new technology is compatible also with slower carrier equipment operating at 10 and 40 Gbps.

PHILADELPHIA — Some of the nation’s largest cable companies are interested in buying Bresnan Communications, anycom hcc 500 bluetooth car kit retail packaging a mid-sized cable company operating in the West, a person familiar with the talks said.

WASHINGTON — A Senate committee Wednesday approved a bill that would require automakers to meet new safety standards, impose stiff penalties for companies that fail to quickly report defects and double funding for nokia dc 6 car charger retail packaging the government agency overseeing car safety.

The Senate Commerce Committee plan is part of a move by lawmakers to tighten the nation’s auto safety laws following Toyota’s massive recalls.

Under the Senate bill, companies could face penalties of up to $300 million for a slow response to a recall. Toyota paid a record $16.4 million fine for its handling of a recall but critics said the penalty was not severe enough.

To address those concerns, NHTSA could see its annual budget grow from $140 million to $280 million in 2013.

The survey company found a definite link between online experience satisfcation and people heading to the auto showrooms for a test drive. However, in my story, Ryan Robinson, the company’s industry practice leader, reveals that a lot of car makers have their Web strategy all wrong.

“Of course buyers want to see beautiful Web sites. But the main reason the visit the sites is to get information that will help them make a purchasing decision,” he said. In other words: Flash is fine but we want functionality.

Replace Flash with functionality –

Beautiful Web sites with sleek images and fancy videos may look great but consumers would rather have fast loading pages and useful applications.

Manufacturers need to strike a balance between Flash and functionality, according to the survey. Ultimately, buyers look for a site they can use, as opposed to one they can simply view.

Multi-tasking is the ticket – The site has to be relevant to the consumer. The survey shows online credit applications are no longer a novelty, but an expected option for online users.

Other options online customers want include:

- Scheduling a sales appointment (76 per cent);
- Completing a credit application (72 per cent);
- Requesting a price quote from dealer (66 per cent);
- Obtaining a brochure of a vehicle (58 per cent);
- Locating a vehicle at a dealership with an inventory locator tool (51 per cent);
- Access to local or independent dealer sites (38 per cent)
- Investigate discounts, sale offers or rebates (37 per cent)
- Use the search tool to help locate information (33 per cent)

Mobile Web access – Around 26 per cent of those aged 46 and below are looking for , according to Robinson.

“I think it will be increasingly important for manufacturers to develop sites specifically designed for the smaller smart phone screens,” he said.

As smart phones gain more features and functionality, he said, consumers will develop the habit of browsing for products on their handsets.

Of course, for this to work, the other social networks would have to agree to play by OneSocialWeb’s rules — and I suspect they won’t want to make it easy for users to jump from their own network to another.

Look for a public OneSocialWeb beta later this summer.

Like Elgg, Pligg is an open-source platform for building social networks. The key difference between the two is that Pligg is also a content management system.

Specifically, Pligg is a CMS that enables users to submit and vote on news articles, like Digg. Besides the usual up-or-down voting system, Pligg offers a chance to rate the articles using a five-star scale. While more than good enough for this kind of story-sharing, Pligg really isn’t going to be the basis of a Facebook-type network.

Here’s the good news: Pip.io is already up and running, and it is a real would-be Facebook competitor. Here’s the bad news: It is still very rough.

For instance, when Steve  asked it to find members of Pip.io whom he already knew by using his Gmail contact list, it instead offered to let him invite everyone on his thousand-plus address book to join him on Pip.io.

The interface, which owes more to Twitter than to Facebook, is easy to use. It also enables you to use other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter from Pip.io. In short, Pip.io is trying to be both a social network and a social network client.

It may, eventually, do quite well at all these jobs. But for now, it’s a work in progress.

Olivier is using an array of Web 2.0 tools to document his trip and share it with peers. Currently, the poll asks followers how cruel or how nice they plan to be to Olivier in their voting. Right now, it looks like Olivier’s in for a tough ride as 88 per cent of respondents indicate they’ll favour more difficult paths (including me – I’m hoping for a Grizzly encounter).

Olivier is also raising money for through his blog, and anyone can make a donation online with a credit card.
